Part Four: the Creation of the Barony of Capulus

Meanwhile, in 523, an ancient fortress that for some strange reason stood abandoned, was discovered in a perfect natural harbor on the Eastern Sea. By its location, surrounded on two sides by sheer cliff faces, on a third by devastatingly dangerous surf, and on a fourth by incredible amounts of natural defenses. Discovered by a group of bandits lead by Keegan Byrne, he claimed it as his own and made it a base of operations for his campaign of building his own empire.

These actions were not well received and resulted in the Duke of Rotaria, Tomas Rotari, who dedicated himself to capturing the bandit and his men. Unfortunately, and to Duke Rotari's dismay, each attempt at destroying the bandit resulted in his ships being quickly sunk by the superior defenses of the fortress. At his wits' end and desperate to dispatch the bandit, Duke Rotari was in process of requesting aid from the King when he was approached by a strange and mysterious man. The man identified himself as Mandrake Capulus, third son of the Baron of Trellheim.

In parley with the Duke, Mandrake informed the Duke that, during his extensive studies at the Academy of Arcane Arts in Hollym, he had come across a few researches that might aid and prove a benefit to His Grace. Mandrake struck a bargain with the Duke: in return for defeating Keegan Byrne, he requested title to the lands he liberated of the offending bandit. Anxious to have the bandit removed and the opposition he posed destroyed, Duke Rotari agreed and offered his army in assistance. In a quiet voice, Mandrake refused his aid and walked north alone.

Three months later at a prearranged time, a sloop sent by the Duke approached the fortress. There they discovered an empty city with Mandrake standing in the open front gates. No trace of the bandits or their leader was ever found, and Mandrake spoke to no one as to how he defeated a castle no army could take, alone. So was the Barony of Capulus formed in 525.

The newly acquired city of Sercia was settled by Rotarians and begain to prosper as a major port. In 528, Mandrake Capulus married Lady Xavieria Myrrdyn, the third daughter of a minor lord from a far-western land. In the newly appointed Stoneholm Castle, Mandrake and his bride made their home and the new baronial capital. Sadly their life together was cut tragically short. Lady Myrrdyn died her final death in 531 giving birth to their only child, a daughter named Siobhan Capulus.

Siobhan reached maturity and married the fourth son of a minor noble from Warwyck named Boddin Montesque. The following year, Siobhan gave birth to a son, Timmon Montesque. Overjoyed at the birth of his grandson, Mandrake named the young child heir to Capulus. Unfortunately, Mandrake died of old age shortly thereafter.

A strange and mysterious man claiming to be Mandrake Capulus would surface in Ravenholt in 590. This beings' claims have reportedly been substantiated, though the details behind his reemergence are unclear.

Part Five: the Rise of Basil Ravenhurst

Baron Westmarch worked diligently and untiringly in his duties to strengthen and nurture the lands in his care for many years. Sadly, during a Northmen ambush of his hunting party in 532, Boran Westmarch suffered his final death. His eldest child Trina Westmarch thus became the new Baroness of Westmarch.

Trina had married an impoverished knight from Niman by the name of Sir Goodwin Northridge in 520. From that marriage, they had a single child, a boy named Willfred. Upon Willfred's majority in 540, and after 8 years of rule, Trina (who never really liked the responsibilities and trappings of baronial leadership) abdicated her position. Named as her heir, Willfred Northridge became the new Baron of Westmarch.

In 545, King Hendrick II died in his bed at the age of 73. His eldest surviving child, Roderick was crowned King. He was 24.

Life in the Northern Marches remained mostly peaceful until the summer of 566, when increasingly aggressive Northmen launched an all-out war on the Baronies of Westmarch and Eastwyck. Sadly, the tragedies of that war would be felt across the lands. Goodwin Northridge, Cecil Swordhand and his entire family would all, oddly, suffer their final deaths during these battles. Baron Northridge was struck down during a long and bloody battle with the Northmen in the spring of 567. Cecil Swordhand and his entire family were slain in 569 when the capital of Eastwyck was sacked by the Northmen.

In an attempt to boost the flagging morale of his troops, King Roderick traveled to the front. In the midst of his trip, he was captured by a sizeable raiding party of Northmen. The Northmen, led by a fierce war chief known as Theodoric, would have escaped with the King if it was not for the actions of a young captain of heavy horse. The young captain rallied his troops, the White Raven Company, and galloped in to save the King. The battle raged at White Sands Ford of the Blood River for what felt like days to the young man. Ultimately with a last surge of energy, the young captain slew Theodoric, personally saving the King's life. The young man was Basil Ravenhurst.

The daring and suicidal attack to save their liege that resulted in Theodoric's death weakened the Northmen's morale and threw them in to a disarray. In honor of his heroic and selfless act, Basil Ravenhurst was awarded the lands of Eastwyck and the title of Baron as successor to Cecil Swordhand. By the fall of 569, the war with the Northmen was over.

Part Six: the Creation of the Barony of Elfheim

During the last months of the war with battles raging, it became known to the King that there was a group of elves known as Drae (or Dark Elves) that lived in a remote area north of the Bay of Pecaree. Dark of skin, they favored the underground cities that they built. Like all other peoples discovered in the lands, they were offered the option of joining the Kingdom. Not open to being pressed on all sides by what they considered "the inferior races", they were reluctant to join the Kingdom. It finally took the King himself promising aid in times of need, in 569, to convince the Drae to join the Kingdom. Thus in 569 the Barony of Elfheim was established.
